Christmas During the Coronavirus

This year has not been like any other, and this is especially true for Christmas. But fortunately, there are a lot of creative initiatives aimed at helping people enjoy this special time of year.

This year was difficult for everyone, especially those who were the most affected by the economic consequences of the coronavirus and those who saw their business suffer or lost their job, as well as those fighting every day on the frontline and saving lives. Fortunately, those in need are not alone this holiday season, as many initiatives have been set up to help them, and people in general, keep the cheer alive.

The “Rest the doc” Facebook group has been helping healthcare workers during the coronavirus by listing empty apartments across the country. Thanks to them, healthcare workers can get free accommodation close to the hospital they’re working at. Even if it’s not the same as celebrating Christmas with their loved ones, doctors and nurses who work far from home or don’t want to put their families at risk can stay in a property close to their workplace for free.

‘Tis the season to be merry, meaning mulled wine and Christmas markets are a must. Budapest’s Christmas Market at the St. Stephen Basilica was voted the second-best in Europe last year, but due to the coronavirus and restrictions in force, it and the numerous other seasonal markets typically found across the capital and country this time of year must stay closed. In order to help the artisans and craftsmen who usually would be selling their goods at the Christmas Market in Vörösmarty Square, that market has moved online so that people can still buy their favorite gifts for Christmas. The main goal of the campaign is to support Hungarian artisans during the epidemic and connect craftsmen with customers. The initiative involves nearly 50 sellers in six categories.
